Thanks to the Barbie Twins again for informative postings on Twitter and Facebook. This is a simple but important post about PET FOOD RECALL. Tell anyone you can as none of us wants our friends to get sick or worse.
Please help spread the information. Thank you.
Natura
Pet has confirmed they are recalling at least 20 pet food products
affecting dogs, cats, and ferrets. We heard a rumor that Natura was
having a major re...call
due to possible salmonella contamination. After spending half an hour
on hold with them, a friendly representative finally confirmed the
recall and gave us the list. Why they don’t have a readily available
press release on their website or through the FDA, we don’t know. The
products listed below may be contaminated with salmonella. These
products appear to be distributed nationwide through PetCo, various
online retailers, and local businesses. This is shaping up to be a
large recall. Please spread the word. Like Healing Springs Animal
Hospital on Facebook for the latest pet health & safety updates.
This is not the first negative news since Proctor & Gamble
purchased Natura Pet in 2010. In 2011, Natura Pet settled a $2.15
million class action lawsuit for allegedly overstating the quality of
their ingredients. The lawsuit was started in 2009, one year before
Proctor & Gamble became involved with Natura Pet.
The
recall affects the products named below that also have an expiration
date between 12/17/13 and 1/2/14. If you have products possibly
contanimated with salmonella, you should discontinue use. You can
contact the company (800) 532-7261 between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. (CST)
Monday – Friday. Good thing it’s a toll-free number considering the
possible on-hold wait time and the lack of recall help on their website.

My mistake
The book is by Erik Marcus. I apologize for the misspelling of his name. But do yourself a favor and either buy it or take it out from the library (which is good as well, because that shows the library that there is interest in the topic and people are hungry for information). I had to say 'hungry' of course, as many people will respond to the idea of being a vegan because of the wonderous food diversity they become exposed to.
Instead of packaged, prepared and heavily processed foods, they will discover, as I have, the joy of fresh vegetables and fruit. Nuts, whole grains. And more. Wow, They will fall in love with eating all over again, and will probably not have to worry about counting calories. What a wonderful thing!

Global Water Day!
Did you know that the U.N. declared today 'Global Water Day'? This post will be brief, as it is late, and I now have to contemplate the fact that for the 71st day (out of 80), there will be snow this weekend.
We need water, but I wish it would stop snowing. Water is vital and I guess that snow is as well. Maybe it will be the last time this year that the dogs can go out and make snow angels while being the regular angels they are.
Ok, go ahead and make a snowball, or an angel. The winter equivalent of making lemonade out of lemons would be making snow angels out of snow. At least in my mind it is, as I am not too fond of snow. At least not this year.
If you find yourself missing snow, or wanting some extra, we will gladly try to send you some! For me, the worst part always seems to be how long it takes us to find all of our mittens, hats, scarves and once we've found them, we are so bundled up you can barely walk.
But you can smile. So I'll smile and remember that snow is just nature's way of saying be like a child and remember the fun you used to have playing in the snow. And for that, nature gave us our wonderful companions, the dogs, for whom snow is always (it seems) a blessing and a joyous occasion.
And don't forget (I'm reminding myself here!) it takes more muscles to frown than smile. So I will put a smile on my face and I'll join all my canine companions in making snow angels and snowmen and snowwomen. Then we'll all run inside for vegan hot chocolate and vegan marshmallows. Yum, that almost seems like reason enough to like snow!

Why does it cost more to have ethics?
I have thought about this often but it was brought up today by Catherine, who has a daughter full of ethics and compassion but no deep pockets. None of us has deep pockets of course, but why does it seem to be that if you care about others or sentient beings there seems to be a direct correlation between that and how little money you have. Perhaps it is because those that care for others realize that the true wealth involves giving and caring, not in accumulating.
Either way, it presents a problem for many young people just starting out on the path to independent living. They shouldn't have to compromise their ethics just because it is much, much cheaper to purchase highly processed and chemically altered food. We all should be able to buy healthy & nutritious food that is still in it's natural form - the best way to eat (according to most doctors/nutritionists you talk to). Why? We all know that food and clothing are big businesses. And that us little guys don't really stand a chance.
So a simple question: Does anyone know of any way of obtaining healthy, ethical choices at a reasonable cost? Perhaps people can start some sort of food/clothing exchange based on good deeds.
For example, someone takes out your trash for a week and in return, you help purchase groceries?
Just a thought. Consider it, and if you have any ideas, feel free to pass them along. We have m;uch to be proud of with our younger generation, and this will only add to that .

The New Ethics of Vegan by Eric Markos and more
I'm still a bit wary about this blogging site, but I'll give it another go. So here goes!!
Before I start talking about my latest discovery, allow me to vent. Does it seem to anyone else that we are being played with by our great mother nature? I don't question our great planet but it seems to me that winter is just toying with us. One day it is beautiful and sunny - full of hope and crocus plants all craning their tiny necks to the sun. The next day, it is snowing again. AGAIN. Nickle and dime. Need a coat for the dog, then the next day, we don't. I don't know about you, but I'm done with it. Course we don't have much choice do we? We can't control everything (and that is a good - no, a great thing).
Ok, done with that. Let me share with you the latest book I've been reading. The New Ethics of Vegan by Erik Marcos. I know it is not a new book but the information contained within the very manageable book is immense. And useful. When I became a vegetarian, in the stone ages where we had to don gas masks before entering the local health food store, I kinda knew that eating a plant based diet was good for our earth. I became a vegetarian strictly because I love animals. I didn't care that there were health benefits, tho I now enjoy the fact that there are numerous studies showing the healthy benefits of such a diet. No, I became a vegetarian after reading Upton Sinclain's "The Jungle" which was followed by some Mad Magazine that showed exactly what a cow was turned into at the supermarket - it was a powerful image that haunts me to this day. The same can be said for Mr. Marcos' book. The image of all the suffering and cruel means by which big agriculture kills our fellow sentient beings is beyond words, but thankfully he found words to describe the events.
It has always bothered me that one can go into a supermarket and purchase a 'rotisserie' chicken for $5.00. I always think 'is that how much that poor animals life is worth to these people'? Surely a life is far more valuable than a measly $5.00. Throw away change. I guess for big business and those with a vested monetary interest, it's merely chump change. And we are the chumps that refuse to change.
So in the interest of all, be a force for change. If you are not a vegetarian or a vegan yet, start by following 'Meatless Mondays'. Once you see how easy it is and how good you feel, that will surely be followed by another and then another meatless day, til you are no longer counting the days until your next meal of flesh. Instead, you will start to crave kale, broccolli and other delicious foods. I believe it is in Mr. Marcos's book that he points out that you can eat all the green, nutritious foods you want, and you won't gain weight. The only thing that will get fatter is your sense of accomplishment and joy at discovering all the great foods that are available to you. And it gets better for you will also gain the knowledge that you are, for the most part, putting healthier food into your system which will make you rev like a racing car.
Go ahead, make your own day. I dare you!

Tomorrow is Tony's Day
But for today, we need everyone to read, understand and support the good folks at the Animal Legal Defense Fund because tomorrow is Tony's big day. I will not try to write a better post than has already been posted, so I will merely reprint it here.
If you are on Twitter, follow #FreeTonyTiger, #ALDF, #FreeTonyNow#TeamTony. He needs all the help he can get. Living for over 12 years in a truck stop in Louisiana is no place for a tiger. His friends will be battling in court tomorrow to have him released to a reputable sanctuary. Help him in any way you can think of. He needs it. We all do. Thank you. This can also be a belated birthday to a dear friend of mine who worked with tigers. Shout out to the Central Florida Animal Reserve. Big roar.
